Young Adults Aging Out of Foster Care Should Get Health Coverage Through Medicaid

For young people who have experienced foster care, access to affordable health insurance is critical to their everyday success. While Federal Law has expanded health coverage to alumni who were in foster care at age 18, there are significant roadblocks to enrolling in and maintaining coverage. Some Good News about Foster Youth

Fostering Advocates Arizona (FAAZ) is a CAA initiative focused on improving the outcomes of young adults who have experienced foster care. FAAZ is guided by young adults who have experienced foster care, with the goal of ensuring that young adults have the information, resources and support they need to transition to a new life. Only a few years old, and FAAZ is already engaging ambitious and successful young adults.

The 2015 Legislative Session is Over

The legislators have left the Capitol but the rest of us around the state have to deal with the damage. And there is a lot of damage. In the name of fiscal responsibility, Governor Ducey and the majority of legislators voted for a budget with austere and damaging cuts to children, families, and education. Then, those same lawmakers voted YES on new special interest tax cuts that clearly and deliberately move the budget further away from structural balance.

A Bad Budget for Arizona

In the early hours of Saturday, March 7, the Arizona legislature passed the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2015. While the budget balances revenues and expenditures for one year, it lacks a greater vision for Arizona's children and families and future.

Help for Youth Aging Out of Foster Care

For young adults who have experienced foster care, access to affordable health care is critical to their future success. Starting January 1, 2014, young adults who aged out of foster care in Arizona at age 18 and are under age 26, may qualify for a special health insurance program called Young Adult Transitional Insurance (YATI).
