Governor Ducey and a majority of state lawmakers said they had to make dramatic cuts to K-12 and university education, child care, health care, and child safety because it is their top priority to put the budget back into so-called “structural balance.” But after the budget was adopted, those very same lawmakers voted for several more tax cuts that throw the budget out of balance and still leave children and education behind.

But these same lawmakers have acted repeatedly to destroy that balance by voting for new and bigger tax cuts. More than one-third of the projected budget gap between revenues and expenses for next fiscal year is because of tax cuts passed since the Great Recession began.

State Spending on K-12 Education Is Up – Barely

The Joint Legislative Budget Committee staff has issued its annual calculation of K-12 education spending over the last ten years - from fiscal year 2006 through the current fiscal year (2015).Compared to last year, fiscal year 2015 per-pupil funding, adjusted for inflation, has increased by $17 to $3,529, a 0.5% increase. This is still significantly less than fiscal year 2008, when per-pupil spending was $4,654.
