Parents, grandparents, students aren’t fooled by the new state budget

Governor Ducey and many legislators are making proud pronouncements about their priority to get the state budget into structural balance. But these same lawmakers have acted repeatedly to destroy that balance by voting for new and bigger tax cuts. More than one-third of the projected budget gap between revenues and expenses for next fiscal year is because of tax cuts passed since the Great Recession began.

A Bad Budget for Arizona

State Spending on K-12 Education Is Up – Barely

The Joint Legislative Budget Committee staff has issued its annual calculation of K-12 education spending over the last ten years - from fiscal year 2006 through the current fiscal year (2015).Compared to last year, fiscal year 2015 per-pupil funding, adjusted for inflation, has increased by $17 to $3,529, a 0.5% increase. This is still significantly less than fiscal year 2008, when per-pupil spending was $4,654.

Children’s Action Alliance congratulates Governor Brewer and state senators and representatives for passing two new laws this week to protect children and strengthen families. These new laws create and fund a stand-alone Department of Child Safety with internal and external accountability features.  The laws create a framework to respond to and reduce child abuse and neglect with both social work and law enforcement tools.  Read more
