Arizona Grandparent Ambassadors statewide will gather at the 5th Arizona Grandparent Ambassador Summit next month to network and plan for next steps in their advocacy agenda.Whether you are a grandparent raising a grandchild or community supporter, your participation is welcome.  This summit is a great event to meet others in the same situation, discuss matters of concern and attend workshop sessions on legal issues, being an advocate and helping kids through traumatic situations. September is Grandfamilies/Kinship Care Month

Sixteen cities across Arizona have proclaimed September as Kinship Care Month, a time to recognize grandparents and other family members raising children who cannot be cared for by their own parents. Thank you to the following mayors for their support at September 1st news conferences in Pima and Maricopa Counties: Jackie Meck of Buckeye, Jonathan Rothschild of Tucson (pictured below), and Tom Schoaf of Litchfield Park. Like 60,000 children in Arizona today, they were raised by their grandparents or other relatives for part of their childhoods. This practice, called kinship care, has been growing in Arizona and throughout the nation.

The challenges and opportunities facing Arizona grandfamilies are readily apparent and are reflected in recent census data. The data, five year estimates (2006-2010) from the American Community Survey show that about 70,000 or 4% of all children in Arizona are being raised by their grandparents.
