KidsCare is Back, Families Can Now Apply

After more than six years’ hiatus, KidsCare will finally be available as a health coverage choice for working families. This is exciting news for Arizona families who have been fighting for an affordable option for medical insurance for their children. Beginning Tuesday, July 26, families across Arizona who earn too much to qualify for the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), yet cannot afford the cost of private health insurance, will be able to apply for low- or no-cost coverage through KidsCare. Together, our voices are powerful and do make a difference. Thursday, the Arizona house voted to lift the freeze on KidsCare, and today the senate did the same. The bill is now on its way to Governor Ducey, who has publicly stated he will sign the measure into law. Because of you, the many organizations and individuals who rallied for kids, 30,000 Arizona children of working poor families will now be able to access affordable health coverage. Read more

It is surprising and disturbing to report that Governor Ducey and legislative Republicans have ignored calls from across the state to lift the freeze on KidsCare.  After Senate President Any Biggs and a small band of extremist legislators threatened to blow up the entire budget deal, not a single Republican in the House voted for the proposed amendment to restore KidsCare and only two Republicans in the Senate voted yes.We are grateful for the strong and steadfast support of the House and Senate Democrats who made KidsCare a top priority all throughout the legislative session. We Need You to Reach Out to State Lawmakers on KidsCare

Your voice is needed at the legislature to help to get health coverage for Arizona kids. Right now, 160,000 Arizona children, many of whom are from working poor families, do not have health insurance and do not have access to affordable coverage options. On Tuesday, February 9th at 2pm, the Health Committee in the House will be hearing HB 2309, geared toward lifting the enrollment freeze on Arizona’s KidsCare and providing access to health care for thousands of Arizona children. Arizona Organizations, Your Support is Needed to Reinstate KidsCare

As you know, the Cover Kids Coalition is supporting efforts to unfreeze the KidsCare program in Arizona, currently the only state in the country without a Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). A recent study by Georgetown University and Children’s Action Alliance found more than 160,000 Arizona children do not have health coverage, the second highest rate of uninsured kids in the nation.
