Your Chance to Comment on Your Health Insurance Costs

Posted April 1, 2013 to Blog, enews, Health | Comments (0)

As a result of the Affordable Care Act, known as “Obamacare,” anytime a health insurer raises premiums more than 10% in a year, those premiums must be reviewed by an independent actuary to determine if they are reasonable. You can see a list of completed and pending reviews and explanations of health insurance rate hikes in Arizona, some as much as 38%, here.

For small employer plans, the reviews are conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), while for those families and individuals who buy directly from a health insurer the reviews are now being conducted by the Arizona Department of Insurance (AzDOI). You can now find out as a consumer whether your rate hike was found reasonable. So far, the following companies have had increases in Arizona that were deemed unreasonable: John Allen, Time, Trustmark, and United Security.

Several proposed rate increases at the link above are currently pending, and this is your opportunity to comment on the rate increases. If you buy insurance directly from the insurer as an individual or family, you can email Ratereview@azinsurance.gov to comment while it is under review. If your plan has an increase of 10% or more and is purchased through a small employer, you can comment by emailing ratereview@hhs.gov. This does not apply to the self insured plans that many large employers offer.
