Children’s Action Alliance, Arizona Center for Economic Progress Applaud Defeat of Proposition 320

PHOENIX — Children’s Action Alliance and the Arizona Center for Economic Progress issued the following statements after Arizona voters rejected Proposition 320:

“Arizona voters saw Prop. 320 for what it was: a bait and switch,” said David Lujan, executive director of Children’s Action Alliance. “It promised to help teachers while giving them no pay raise and threatening the very funding districts use to pay them. Voters chose children, educators and strong public schools over unclear rules and punishment.”

“This vote sends a clear message: Arizona cannot solve school underfunding by rearranging inadequate resources or threatening further cuts,” said Joseph Palomino, director of the Arizona Center for Economic Progress. “Our state must invest in teachers, classrooms and the full range of services students need to succeed.”

Children’s Action Alliance and the Arizona Center for Economic Progress thank the parents, educators, school staff, advocates and community members who helped Arizonans understand what was at stake. The organizations will continue working for adequate, sustainable public-school funding and better teacher pay.
